2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Year of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are anything but new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. Yet, their visibility has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this trend, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially visible elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the trend in gaming looks particularly powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities lend themselves to a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year for amphibian gaming.

If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be on the verge of a true amphibian entertainment revival.
