Anthropogenic Global Heating Led to Two in Three Heat Deaths in Europe This Summer

A recent study examining 854 large urban centers revealed that human-caused global heating accounted for approximately two-thirds heat-related fatalities in the continent this past summer.

Research Results and Approach

Epidemiologists and environmental researchers attributed over sixteen thousand out of nearly twenty-five thousand summer fatalities between June and August to the unusually hot weather caused by greenhouse gas emissions.

The preliminary analysis, which uses established scientific methods, found that climate change increased city heat levels 2.2°C hotter on average, greatly raising the toll of deaths due to dangerously warm weather.

“The direct link from carbon emissions to increased temperatures along with increased death rates cannot be ignored,” stated a climate scientist. “If we had not continued burning carbon-based energy over the last decades, the majority of the estimated deaths would not have happened.”

Effect on Vulnerable Groups

The study found that senior citizens were the hardest affected during the intense heat, including 85% of the deceased aged more than sixty-five years old and 41% over 85.

“The vast majority of heat deaths happen in residences and hospitals, where people suffering from existing medical issues are pushed beyond endurance,” noted a public health specialist. “However, heat is seldom listed in death certificates.”

Individual Tragedies

A number of victims who lost their lives outside were named in local media coverage. A elderly individual from a Spanish town fell ill during taking a stroll in August, amid weather as high as 45°C.

A second incident concerned a middle-aged parent of four in Italy’s north, that passed away while working at a construction site near Bologna, as the heat rose to 38 degrees on that date.

“He phoned my mother to say that he’d come home for a meal,” recalled his son. “That he’d be home by noon.”

Community Dangers and Appeals for Action

Experts caution that the public health risk posed by extreme heat is still not fully recognized, despite mounting evidence of its lethal effects.

“No one would expect a person to risk their life working in torrential rain or gale-force winds,” observed an expert. “But dangerous temperatures is still viewed without enough seriousness.”

While European cities are more prepared for dealing with extreme heat compared to in 2003, emergency services are struggling to keep pace with rising temperatures and an ageing population.

Doctors have called for city-specific response strategies during periods of extreme heat, more green spaces in urban environments, and improved access to air-conditioning for high-risk populations, including elderly individuals.

“If we don’t act now, the toll will rise,” stated an adaptation specialist. “We must urgently phase out carbon fuels and implement measures safeguarding those most vulnerable from increasingly deadly summer heat.”
