Rocks placed on Railway Lines Leave Hundreds of Tourists en route to the Inca Citadel
Approximately nine hundred travelers found themselves trapped near the historic Incan ruins of Machu Picchu recently, as stated by government officials.
This situation arose after the local railway ceased operations following local demonstrations. Demonstrators had set obstructive boulders along the railway route, effectively blocking rail transit.
Root of the Unrest
The unrest started recently when the contract expired for Consettur that shuttles tourists between Aguas Calientes and the site of the ancient ruins.
Local groups argue that decisions are being made opaquely and impartiality in the bidding for the transport service. Protesters want more community input in the vital tourism industry.
Rescue Operations
Local authorities confirmed that more than 1,400 visitors had been safely removed on Monday, but around 900 were still unable to leave in the base community.
Along with the rock obstructions, demonstrators additionally disturbed part of the railway line, damaging the stability of the tracks and delayed rescue operations.
Several visitors attempted walking out due to the unrest.
Officials are working to clear the tracks and ensure the secure evacuation of all stranded tourists.
